ID: John Fairfield (Gen. 1) [note spelling ffairefeild] becomes freeman May 13, 1640
Source:Lucius R. Paige. 1849. "List of Freeman." New England Historical and Genealogical Register . 3(2): 187-194.
Notes: Becoming a freeman was a vital step to good stature in the community. That John was accepted as such indicates he was willing to take the freeman oath, in and of itself an indication of certain value systems. For instance, most Quakers did not take oaths, and only a small portion of the population chose to pursue freeman status.
