Transcription: This is to Certify That Sergt Augustus Fairfield who enlisted in Co. G. FIFTY-FIFTH REGIMENT ILLINOIS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY on the 1st day of November 1861, and re-enlisted as a Veteran on the 31st day of March 1864, and who was honorably discharged on the 14th day of August 1865, was engaged in the following Battles, in all of which he distinguished himself for coolness and bravery:
Shiloh, April 6 and 7, 1862; Russell House, Corinth, Chickasaw Bayou, December 27, 28, 29, 1862; Arkansas Post, January 10 and 11, 1863; Snyder’s Bluff, Champion Hill, the assaults on Vicksburg, May 19 and 22, 1863, and siege of same; Siege of Jackson, July 10 to 16, 1863; Tuscumbia, Chattanooga, North Chickamauga Pontoon Expedition and Missionary Ridge, November 24 and 25, 1863; Raising the siege at Knoxville; Assault on Kenesaw Mountain, June 27; Atlanta, Ezra Church, July 28 and August 3; Jonesboro, August 31 and September 1, 1864; Clinton, Statesboro, Fort McAllister and Savannah, Ga.; Duck Creek Branch, South and North Edisto, and Columbia, S. C. February 15 and 16, 1865; Bentonville, N. C., March 20 and 21, 1865; in many skirmishes, and was under fire of the enemy one-hundred and twenty days.
