Notes: Sylvester was the son of Joseph Fairfield III and his wife, Sarah (Spring). Sylvester was born October 22, 1823, in Pittsfield, MA, according to Cooke's Pittsfield Families. He moved to Indiana prior to 1850 and served in the Civil War, 25th Indiana Infantry. He married Mary Elizabeth Barker April 12, 1846 in Indiana (see marriage records). They had eight children born in Indiana. Sylvester died May 6, 1883, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He left a note indicating his age and physical ailments, including rheumatoid arthritis, were factors.
